How to Find a Reliable Tradesman for Your Bathroom Renovation

5th Oct 2015

Plenty of homeowners prefer rolling up their sleeves, getting out their tools, and doing everything themselves when it comes to bathroom renovation. Of course, it’s often a lot easier to bring in a professional, especially when there’s a lot of work to be done. However, you still have to find the right one for the job.

Here’s how to find the right plumber, electrician, or builder to help you out.

Word of Mouth

By far the best way to find a reliable tradesman is to ask around. Out of all your local friends, family members, and colleagues it’s almost guaranteed that at least one or two will have had a professional in to do some work. They’ll be able to tell you how satisfied they were with the project and if there were any problems.

If you don’t know anyone who’s recently used a reliable tradesman, try asking any industry contacts. For example, if you’ve employed a good electrician in the past then ask them if they know any good plumbers. Their own reputation will be on the line, so you’re unlikely to be put in touch with anybody unreliable, and mentioning the tradesman who referred you might even put you in line for a discount. Always go for people with a good reputation, they would need to have built that up over time, so it is important to be vigilant about this, for instance, if you need an electrician in your area, check and see if they have a website and find out more about their services that they offer so you can get a better understanding of what they can do for you.

Local Recommendations

Maybe you’re new to the area, or simply don’t know anyone you could ask for a tip. If this is the case, try getting a recommendation from another source. If you go to the Trading Standards website, you can use your postcode to find your local office, then contact them for both advice and a list of recommendations.

Online Recommendations

These tend to be the least reliable method of finding a dependable tradesperson, but it’s still a good idea to check online to make sure that any recommendations you’ve been given are trustworthy.

Recommendation hubs provide a place for previous customers to provide feedback and ratings, so you can get a good overall idea of a tradesman’s quality. RatedPeople and TrustaTrader are the most commonly used options in the UK.

Getting stuck with a sub-par tradesman can mean delays, added costs, and, ultimately, an inferior final result, so it’s well worth taking the time to find someone reliable.
